Ibanez built the UEW5E as an electro-acoustic concert-style ukulele within its UEW series, positioning it as a plugged-in instrument with a cutaway EW body profile for upper-fret access. The model carried an undersaddle pickup fed through an Ibanez AEQ2U preamp with an onboard tuner, making it suited to amplified performance alongside acoustic playing.
The body was constructed entirely in sapele — top, back, and sides — with an open-pore finish on all surfaces including the neck back. The okoume neck carried a purpleheart fretboard and matching purpleheart bridge, with maple dot inlays and an abalone soundhole rosette. The fretboard runs flat in radius over 19 frets, with a 35mm nut width and a 382mm scale length. String spacing at the saddle measures 13mm, and the instrument shipped strung with Ibanez/Aquila NYLBLACK ukulele strings. The compensated saddle and chrome open-gear tuners complete the hardware complement. The preamp system draws power from two CR2032 coin lithium cells (3V each) and outputs via a 1/4-inch endpin jack.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — including the CR2032 batteries, saddle, nut, strings, or tuner buttons — should cross-reference Ibanez UEW series parts lists and consult a qualified luthier or guitar technician for any setup or electronics work.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
