Ibanez built the EP5BP as part of the EP Signature Series, positioning it around the playing requirements reflected in the model's appointments — most notably the 24-fret fretboard, a fret count uncommon in acoustic designs, and the Special Thin EP body profile. The instrument carried a Black Pearl High Gloss finish and was equipped with a Fishman Sonicore pickup paired with an Ibanez AEQ210TF preamp with onboard tuner, making it a purpose-built electro-acoustic.
The top is solid Engelmann Spruce over Okoume back and sides, with a Nyatoh neck. Both the fretboard and bridge are Cultured Maple.
