Ibanez built the EP5BP as part of the EP Signature Series, positioning it around the playing requirements reflected in the model's appointments — most notably the 24-fret fretboard, a fret count uncommon in acoustic designs, and the Special Thin EP body profile. The instrument carried a Black Pearl High Gloss finish and was equipped with a Fishman Sonicore pickup paired with an Ibanez AEQ210TF preamp with onboard tuner, making it a purpose-built electro-acoustic.
The top is solid Engelmann Spruce over Okoume back and sides, with a Nyatoh neck. Both the fretboard and bridge are Cultured Maple. The 12th fret features a "Vai" special inlay, and the soundhole rosette is an original design decal. Hardware includes gold die-cast tuners with half-moon brown acrylic knobs. The nut and saddle are plastic, bridge pins are Ibanez Advantage, and the guitar shipped strung with D'Addario EXP16 strings gauged .012/.016/.024/.032/.042/.053. The scale length is 651mm, the nut width measures 43mm, and the neck radius is 305mmR. String spacing at the bridge is 11mm. Output is via a standard 1/4" jack.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — including Cultured Maple fretboard components, Fishman Sonicore pickup elements, or the AEQ210TF preamp unit — should consult a qualified guitar technician to confirm fit against the instrument's current condition before installation.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
