Washburn built the HG12S-O-U as part of its Heritage Series, positioning the Grand Auditorium body shape as a versatile platform suited to both strumming and fingerstyle approaches. The model carried a solid mahogany soundboard, a configuration Washburn noted as producing a warmer, fuller character compared to spruce or cedar tops, and one the company stated improves with age.
The top is braced with Cathedral Peaked Scalloped-X bracing. Back, sides, and neck are mahogany, with the neck finished in satin and fitted with a two-way truss rod. The fretboard and bridge are Ovangkol, with dot inlays across 20 frets on a 25-1/2" scale. The nut is GraphTech NuBone at 1-11/16" width. Tuning machines are chrome diecast. Remaining hardware is chrome. The guitar shipped strung with D'Addario EXP light-gauge phosphor bronze strings and features a Washburn Heritage rosette and a tortoise pickguard. The finish is natural gloss.
