Washburn positioned the AG40CEK-A-U within its Apprentice Series as an entry point for the committed beginner — a Grand Auditorium cutaway acoustic-electric built to deliver functional performance at the foundational stage of a player's development. The model carried the Barcus-Berry LX4 preamp system as a central selling point, offering amplified capability alongside an acoustic voice shaped by a select spruce top and flame maple back and sides.
Construction centred on a select spruce top with quarter-sawn scalloped bracing, paired with flame maple back and sides and a mahogany neck. The fretboard and bridge are engineered wood, carrying dot inlays across 20 frets at a 25-1/2" scale. The nut is ABS at 1-11/16" width. A custom Apprentice rosette and a flame maple capped headstock with chrome diecast tuners with black buttons complete the exterior in a gloss Natural finish. The Barcus-Berry LX4 preamp provides Volume, Bass, Mid, and Treble controls alongside Notch and Presence controls and a built-in tuner. The guitar shipped strung with D'Addario EXP-16 light phosphor bronze strings.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — including bridge saddles, ABS nut blanks, or Barcus-Berry LX4 compatible components — or requiring setup work on the engineered-wood fretboard or bracing should consult a qualified guitar technician for guidance.

What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
