Randall built the KH103-U as a Kirk Hammett signature tube amplifier head, positioned as the same model Hammett used both on the road and in the studio with Metallica. It sat at the top of Randall's signature offering for the collaboration, delivering 120 watts across three fully independent channels, each with its own gain voicing modes. Engineering was handled by Mike Fortin.
The preamp section runs nine 12AX7/ECC83 tubes, with four 6L6 output tubes each carrying individual bias settings. Three independent channels are controlled via dual MIDI-switchable master volumes, and the unit provides two tube-driven FX loops switchable between series and parallel operation via MIDI. Seven MIDI-assignable functions are available per channel. The rear panel carries five speaker jacks accommodating 4, 8, or 16 ohm loads, a line out with level control, MIDI in and thru, and two FX send and two FX return jacks. A three-button MIDI footswitch was included with the unit.
Owners sourcing replacement 12AX7 or 6L6 tubes, footswitch replacements, or speaker cables compatible with the multi-jack output section should use the impedance and tube complement above as the reference point; the individual bias adjustment provision on the output stage means any retubing should be approached with that feature in mind. What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
