Description

Ampeg produced the PF-800-U as part of the Portaflex Series of bass amplifier heads. The unit delivered 800 watts of output power in an ultra-compact chassis, positioning it toward bassists requiring high output in a portable format within the Portaflex line.

The PF-800-U carried an all-tube preamp stage and offered extensive tonal control: bass adjustment of ±12 dB at 40 Hz, a midrange control with five selectable centre frequencies (220 Hz, 450 Hz, 800 Hz, 1.6 kHz, and 3 kHz) at up to +10/−20 dB, and treble at +15/−20 dB at 4 kHz. Maximum gain measured 71 dB with tone controls centred, and signal-to-noise ratio was rated at 74 dB unweighted across 20 Hz–20 kHz. The head was designed to accept dual-voltage mains supply, covering both 100–120 VAC and 200–240 VAC at 50–60 Hz, drawing 200 W from the wall at either voltage. The enclosure measured 3.1 × 15.0 × 10.8 inches and weighed 11.8 lbs, consistent with its Portaflex portability intent.

Owners requiring service, bias checks on the tube complement, or cabinet impedance matching should consult a qualified amplifier technician familiar with high-wattage bass amplifier heads.

From the people who own them

Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.

Put yours on the record.

The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.

What do you know about this one?

Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
