Ibanez produced the UB804MOB as part of the Upright Series, a line designed to bring upright bass character and aesthetics into an electric bass format. The UB804MOB occupied a position in that series defined by its neck-through construction and fretless fingerboard, targeting players seeking an instrument that bridged amplified upright tone with the playability of a solid-body electric bass.
The bass was built around a maple body with a five-piece Maple/Walnut neck-through construction, a combination chosen for sustain and tonal consistency from heel to body. The fretless Jatoba fretboard carries white dot inlays and runs a compound radius of 60–90mm, accommodating both lower-position chordal work and upper-register melodic playing.
