Ibanez built the TMB30BK as part of the Talman Bass series, positioning it as a short-scale electric bass. The 30-inch scale placed it toward the accessible end of the Talman Bass range, suited to players who required a reduced string length.
The instrument was constructed with a poplar body and a maple neck carrying a jatoba fretboard with white dot inlays. Twenty medium frets span the board, which has a 240mm radius and measures 41mm at the nut, widening to 62mm at the twentieth fret. Neck profile thickness runs 21.5mm at the first fret and 24.5mm at the twelfth. The passive electronics consist of a Dynamix P neck pickup and a Dynamix J bridge pickup — a split-coil and single-coil pairing common to PJ-configured basses. The B10 bridge is set to a 19mm string spacing and carries the factory string set gauged .045/.065/.085/.105, tuned E–A–D–G. All hardware is finished in chrome.
