Ibanez built the SR5006OL as part of the SR Prestige Series, positioning it at the upper tier of the SR bass line as a six-string instrument finished in oil. The Prestige designation indicated domestic Japanese production standards within the SR range, and the oil finish treatment was reflected in the model suffix.
The bass was constructed with an African Mahogany body, wenge top and back, and a five-piece wenge/walnut Atlas-6 HP neck reinforced with KTS titanium rods. The wenge fretboard carried 24 medium frets with Prestige fret edge treatment and mother of pearl and abalone oval inlays. Electronics consisted of a pair of passive Bartolini Custom pickups — one at the neck, one at the bridge — fed into an Ibanez Custom Electronics three-band EQ with an EQ bypass switch, a passive tone control on the treble pot, and a three-way mid-frequency switch. Hardware throughout was finished in gold. The MR5S bridge was set at a 16.5mm string spacing. The Graph Tech BLACK TUSQ XL nut measured 54mm wide at the nut position, with the neck reaching 83mm at the 24th fret, 19.5mm thickness at the first fret, and 23mm at the twelfth. Scale length was 864mm (34 inches) and the fretboard radius 500mm. The instrument shipped strung with Elixir strings gauged .032/.045/.065/.085/.105/.130 in standard six-string bass tuning B through C.
