Washburn built the M108SWK-D-U as part of its Americana Series, positioning it as an all-solid F-Style Florentine cutaway mandolin. Washburn had been constructing mandolins since the late 1800s, and this model sat within a line aimed at players across bluegrass, Celtic, and related styles. The Florentine-style body design was executed deeper than traditional instruments to increase volume and projection, and the wider nut and string spacing were intended to accommodate players with larger hands.
Construction centres on a solid carved European spruce top paired with solid carved mahogany back and sides, braced with quarter-sawn Sitka spruce. The maple neck carries an ebony fretboard with dot inlays, 24 frets, a 1-1/4" bone nut, and a 13-7/8" scale length. Hardware throughout is finished in a distressed treatment, including open-gear tuners, and the bridge is ebony. The instrument ships strung with D'Addario J73 light-gauge mandolin strings and carries a vintage matte finish in Vintage Natural. A hard shell case was included.
