Washburn built the M3SWK-D-U as part of its Americana Series, positioning it as an all-solid F-style mandolin suited to bluegrass and Americana playing. The model sat within a line that Washburn developed drawing on the company's history of mandolin construction dating to the late 1800s, as stated in their product materials.
The instrument is constructed throughout with solid tonewoods: a solid carved European spruce top, solid carved Canadian maple back and sides, and quarter-sawn Sitka spruce bracing. The maple neck carries an ebony fretboard with snowflake inlays across 24 frets, and a bone nut at 1-1/8" width. The scale length is 13-3/4". Hardware is gold throughout, including gold diecast tuners with pearloid buttons. The bridge is ebony. The instrument ships strung with D'Addario J73 light gauge mandolin strings and is finished in a gloss tobacco sunburst. A hardshell case was included with the unit.
