Washburn built the B17K-D-U as part of its Americana Series banjo line, drawing on a heritage of banjo construction that the brand traced back to the late 1800s. The instrument carried a Tobacco Sunburst gloss finish and sat toward the upper end of Washburn's production banjo offerings.
The B17K-D-U was constructed around a flame maple resonator and maple rim with a one-piece flange. The tension hoop was an 11" diecast unit, and the tone ring was Bell Brass. The tailpiece was a clamshell design, complemented by an engraved gold armrest. All five tuners were geared planetary types in a gold finish, and the instrument used separate coordinator rods. The maple neck featured an engraved heel and engraved back of headstock, with an ebony fretboard spanning 22 frets. Inlays were described as Fancy pattern. The nut was ABS at 1-1/4" width, the scale measured 26-3/8", and the bridge was maple with an ebony tip. Strings were fitted as D'Addario J60+ light gauge nickel. All hardware was finished in gold.
