Washburn built the 4N-D-U as a companion instrument to Nuno Bettencourt's long-established N4, produced through the Washburn Custom Shop. The record documents it as a Nuno Bettencourt Signature Series electric guitar — a double-cut solid body — positioned alongside the N4 within Washburn's signature line. The Custom Shop undertook detailed measurement of Bettencourt's personal 4N, including the fabrication of custom measurement tools to capture the neck geometry accurately.
The body is alder, paired with a birds-eye maple neck and an ebony fretboard carrying dot inlays across 22 frets at a 25-1/2" scale. The Stephens Extended Cutaway is a noted feature of the body design. Electronics comprise a Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck position and a Bill Lawrence L-500 in the bridge, selected via a 3-way switch with a single volume control. The hardware package is chrome throughout: a Floyd Rose Original tremolo at the bridge, a Kahler locking nut, and Grover 18:1 tuners. The guitar ships strung with D'Addario strings and is finished in matte natural.
