Washburn produced the M1S-A-U as part of its Americana Series, positioning it as an A-style mandolin with a solid carved European spruce top over maple back and sides, finished in tobacco sunburst gloss. Washburn has been building mandolins since the late 1800s, and the Americana Series sat within that long-running mandolin tradition. The M1S-A-U was sold as a pack configuration.
The top is solid carved European spruce, braced with quarter-sawn Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are maple. The maple neck carries an engineered wood fretboard with dot inlays across 20 frets. The nut is ABS at 1-1/8" width, and the scale runs 13-3/4". Hardware is chrome throughout, including chrome diecast tuners and an alternative-style bridge. Strings fitted were D'Addario J73 light gauge mandolin strings. The nut material is ABS.
