Washburn produced the AF5K-A-U as part of the Apprentice Series, positioning it as the F5 Folk-body acoustic within that line. The model carried a spruce top paired with mahogany back and sides, finished in gloss throughout, and was built around a 25-½" scale length.
The top is supported by quarter-sawn scalloped bracing, which Washburn credited for note presence and warmth across the instrument's full register. The mahogany neck is also gloss finished and meets a 1-11/16" plastic nut. The fretboard and bridge are engineered wood, fitted with 20 frets and dot inlays. Tuning is handled by chrome diecast tuners, consistent with the rest of the chrome hardware. The Washburn Heritage rosette decorates the soundhole, and the guitar shipped strung with D'Addario EXP-16 light phosphor bronze strings. A hard shell case was included with the instrument.
