Washburn built the AD5B as part of the Apprentice Series, positioning it as an entry-level dreadnought acoustic guitar within the broader Washburn acoustic line. The model was offered in a Black finish variant, designated by the "B" suffix in the SKU.
The AD5B-A-U was constructed with a spruce top supported by quarter-sawn scalloped bracing, paired with mahogany back, sides, and neck. The fretboard and bridge are engineered wood, with a plastic nut set at 1-11/16" width. The 25-1/2" scale neck carries 20 frets with dot inlays and a Washburn Heritage rosette at the soundhole. Hardware is chrome throughout, including diecast chrome tuners. The guitar shipped strung with a D'Addario EXP-16 light phosphor bronze set and was accompanied by a dreadnought acoustic guitar case.
