Washburn built the AB40VSK-U as an acoustic bass guitar finished in Vintage Sunburst, positioning it within their archtop acoustic bass line. The instrument was designed to deliver acoustic bass tone through a fully acoustic hollow body construction, augmented by onboard electronics for amplified use.
The AB40VSK-U featured an arched spruce top paired with arched maple back and sides, a combination Washburn employed to balance projection and tonal clarity in an acoustic bass platform. The mahogany neck carried a rosewood fretboard and rosewood bridge, while multi-laminate binding dressed the body edges. Grover tuners handled tuning stability, and a custom piezo pickup system provided the electronic output.
