Electro Harmonix produced the Soul Food as a transparent overdrive pedal, positioning it as an accessible alternative to the Klon Centaur — a pedal that had become difficult to obtain at reasonable cost. The Soul Food sat in EHX's compact effects line, aimed at players who wanted that style of overdrive circuit without the associated scarcity.
The Soul Food's circuit featured boosted power rails, which the design used to provide extended headroom and increased definition. The pedal offered selectable true bypass or buffered bypass modes, giving the owner control over how the unit interacts with the signal chain when disengaged.
